What To Do When Your Heating And/Or Cooling Goes Out
Posted on: 18 November 2015
When your heating and cooling system goes out it can spell big trouble if you are currently experiencing extreme temperatures outside. In fact, during certain times of the year it can even be a life-threatening occurrence.
You want to get an HVAC technician out to fix the problem as soon as possible, but there is the possibility they may not be able to get to you for a couple of days. In this situation, it's important to have a way to stay comfortable temporary and this article will teach you how to make emergency heating and cooling units you can use in the meantime.
Make a temporary emergency heater
You can make a small emergency heater that will heat a small sized room in your home. If you need to create more heat than this, you can make a few of these and set them apart throughout a larger room.
To make the heater, take a clean quart size paint can and put a roll of toilet paper in it that no longer has the cardboard center in it. Take isopropyl alcohol and add it to the can; you want it to come to the top of the toilet paper without covering it completely.
To use the heater, you will drop a match in the alcohol. You can use the lid to control the flame and to put it out when you are done using the heater. You want to set this heater on a fire-resistant surface and keep it a safe distance from flammable objects.
Make a temporary emergency air conditioner
A temporary air conditioner can be made out of a Styrofoam cooler with a tight-fitting lid. You want to take a small-sized fan and trace it on the lid of the cooler. Cut out the center and duct tape the fan to the lid so it will be blowing down into the cooler.
Cut two to three holes in the cooler that are located more toward the top of the cooler. These holes should be the same circumference as the cardboard tubing out of wrapping paper. Take 6 –inch pieces of this tubing and put duct tape around it. Put one tube in each hole and duct tape them securely in place.
Add a good amount of ice to the cooler and put the lid in place. At this point, you can plug in the fan and turn it on. This will cause cool air to blow out and cool a room in your home down.
Now that you know how to heat or cool your home until you can get your air conditioner of furnace fixed, you can stay more comfortable until help from a company like R & B Heating & Air Conditioning arrives.
